I Can't Do It Yet

Zuri and the shoelaces

Play this lessonNarrated out loud. No account, works offline.

Also available in Spanish. The app stops after two lessons a day and suggests something to do away from the screen.

What it teaches

These are the lines the lesson comes back to, and the ones a child actually remembers afterwards.

Add one small word: yet.

A mistake is part of trying, not the end of it.

How it starts

Story time. This is about a girl called Zuri, a pair of shoes with laces, and one very small word that changed how her whole week went.

How the lesson goes

What I can't feels like

  1. Your face goes hot
  2. Your hands want to throw something
  3. A voice says: never try again

What yet means

  1. You haven't finished learning it
  2. Every try teaches your hands something
  3. Hard today isn't hard forever

How a yet turns into a can

  1. Practise for two minutes, not two hours
  2. Stop before you get cross
  3. Try again tomorrow

The question at the end

Your tower keeps falling down. What's the best thing to say?

For the grown-up

Every lesson ends by handing the child something to do off the screen, and telling you what was taught so you can use the same words.

Try this today: Pick your yet thing and practise it for two minutes, then stop. Tell a grown-up: I can't do it yet.

Then: Ask them what they couldn't do when they were your age.
